Spring Like Weather is Here

Posted by Barbara Williams on 2/17/2018 to Backfourty
The weather is getting spring like.  We are starting to get a  steady variety of greens back on the shelves here at Flora Bama Farms.  The freezing weather slowed them down but thankfully did not kill them.   Ricky Durden, who grows using organic practices, brought us a new delivery of his delicious kale. Ray Flowers delivered this morning some beautiful curly mustards. We also  have baby carrots with tops ( ok that is not just greens) in stock from the guys at Local Appetite.  We are excited, as I am sure many of you are about the weather warming up and all the good food that is now coming back our way.

use the phrase “Buddha bowl” to describe deep-rimmed dish overflowing with vibrant food.
If our customers will supply the bowl we will supply the local vibrant greens and crunchy vegetables to fill it.   Besides what I have already mentioned you should check out the watermelon radishes from local appetite, pecans from Price Pecan Farm. Don't forget our  huge variety of micro herbs/ vegetables  by way Lee's and Jesse's microgreen farms.  We will have many more Buddha bowl suggestions coming your way in the coming week.

.Don't forget strawberries.  They are not just for valentines.  We expect to have Florida strawberries through mid March.  Get them while they are available, you can't beat the flavor.

This coming week we are planning on making a new meal kit featuring our local greens and Florida Strawberry's.  Please look for that and check it out.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the weather.

Flora Bama Farms is now participating in a Farmers Market SNAP Support Grant known as Fresh Access Bucks. Fresh Access Bucks makes fresh, local produce more affordable and accessible to low income families while supporting Florida’s farmers and  local  farmers markets. It does so by increasing the purchasing power of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants by providing a one-to-one match for Florida grown fruits and vegetables. A SNAP cardholder who spends $10 of their SNAP benefits at a participating market receives an additional $10 to purchase fresh, local produce.  We recommend that our customers check out our "Shop Local" page to see what items are coming in locally and would quality for Fresh Access Purchases.   Stop in and we will help you stretch your SNAP purchases.

Valentines Day is this coming Wednesday.  Do you have a special Valentine?  We have tried and true recipe for  chocolate covered strawberries, a Valentine favorite.  This is so easy and fun to make.    We have delicious Florida Strawberries in stock, including long stem strawberries.       Your Valentine will love them.

quart of medium-large strawberries (18 to 20 strawberries.
cup semisweet chocolate chips or white vanilla baking chips
teaspoon shortening or vegetable oil

  • 1
Gently rinse strawberries and dry on paper towels (berries must be completely dry). Line cookie sheet with waxed paper.
  • 2
In 1-quart saucepan, melt chocolate chips and shortening over low heat, stirring frequently. Remove from heat.
  • 3
Dip lower half of each strawberry into chocolate mixture; allow excess to drip back into saucepan. Place on waxed paper-lined tray or cookie sheet.
  • 4
Refrigerate uncovered about 30 minutes or until chocolate is firm, or until ready to serve. Store covered in refrigerator so chocolate does not soften (if made with oil, chocolate will soften more quickly at room temperature).

February Has Begun

Posted by Barbara J. Williams on 2/2/2018 to Backfourty
Month one is done and we are off to February.  So much is happening this month.   To start we have Super Bowl Sunday, this Sunday! To help you make it a special day we will have plenty of our Super Boiled Peanuts.  What is so super you may ask?  To start with we use Fidler Farms Super Jumbo Raw Peanuts.  We pick them up every week from Jimmy Fidler's Farm in Summerdale, Alabama.  We also cook these peanuts in house using our own special recipe.  Several in house chefs over a couple years created the recipe we use today.   Through my daily rounds I frequently run into people who bring up our boiled peanuts to me.  Perfect strangers who learn I am with Flora Bama Farms tell me they go out of their way to get some.  It makes me proud every time I hear how much they enjoy them.  We have two flavor profiles spicy and salty.  If you have never tried a boiled peanut, you can come to Flora Bama and get a free sample.   This weekend you can get a large SUPER BOILED PEANUT for  $4.00.  Normally we sell them at $5.00 for a large cup.  In honor of Super Bowl Sunday we will give you a $1.00 off if you tell our cashier  you are here for  the SUPER BOILED PEANUTS.  I know it is corny but I love the feedback.

We also have several salsa's in house. Mango, Black Bean & Corn, Peach , Cherry and others.  You will find these under the Flora Bama Belle , Cherry Republic and Troyer Amish labels.  They are all good.

If you would like to make your own Peco De Gallo, we have the best fresh ingredients  to make it super good.  Check out our vine ripe tomato table and you will find everything you need to make it . There is various hot peppers, garlic, onions, tomatillos, fresh cilantro and more.

Mardi Gra Celebrations are also going on this month.    To help celebrate Mardi Gra we have plenty of RC Cola, made with with pure cane sugar.  Moon Pies and Fidler Farm Mardi Gra Throws utilizing local roasted peanuts.  There is approximately 125/2oz packages of roasted peanuts in every bag.   We take orders in advance for the Mardi Gra Peanut throws from Fidler Farms.  A Bag of 125count throws cost $39.00.  If you order on line by Monday 8 am or call us at 850-944-6911 by early Monday Morning we can have your Mardi Gra Peanut Throws ready for pick up or delivery by Wednesday.

Finally there is Valentines.  To help celebrate Valentines we are getting nice sweet Florida Strawberries from Gunny  Family Farms out of Plant City.   These will be available by the case or by the quart.   We have beautiful red bibb lettuce ( looks like a large beautiful flower)  from Will Mastison's farm, Local Appetite.  Will is also providing us with Red Frill which is a spicy green, adds flavor and texture to any salad.  Check these items out on our "Shop Local" page.

Hope you enjoy your weekend and come see us at "the Farm".
